Each session is tutored by a critically acclaimed stand up comedian along with an experienced award winning promoter …

It’s a great way to meet new friends, improve your confidence, take those first steps onto the stand up ladder if you choose to do so, and above all … have fun.  

You may have already dipped your toes into the deep end of comedy before and perhaps want to fine tune your act and take it to the next level? Or you may be a total newbie who has always wanted to try stand up but never had the opportunity? Whatever your reason, everyone on the course will receive support and guidance at a pace suitable for your own level of confidence and ability.

The Course

Each week you and your fellow course members will explore a carefully tailored programme that will take you through the stages of writing and performing a 3 - 5 minute stand up comedy set. You then have the “option” to perform this set in front of a live audience in week 6 on the glorious Georgian Theatre stage. This is where you can invite all of your friends and family along to the show for free and show them how much you have developed in just 6 weeks of learning comedy or just join the audience yourself to support your course colleagues if you don’t feel ready yourself. 

The workshop sessions are held in The Green Room, Green Dragon Studio’s, Green Dragon Yard


Week 1 - Sunday April 24th - 1pm - 4pm

Week 5 - Sunday May 22nd - 1pm - 4pm

  • A visit from a professional comedian

  • Q&A – Ask them anything!

  • Putting together your first sets

Week 6 - Sunday May 29th - 1pm - 4pm & 5pm - 7:30pm (Graduation Show)

  • Practicing your new short sets

  • What next? Applying for gigs!

  • A live show at the fabulous Georgian Theatre!

The graduation show is held inside the Georgian Theatre on the main stage. This is where you invite all your friends and family along to the free showcase.


Each act will also receive:

  • A link to a 4k multi camera recording of their graduation set 

  • A graduation certificate

  • An advice sheet on what to do next / how and where to keep performing comedy

Meet your Tutor

Aidan Goatley is a comedian and author with success across the UK, and abroad. He has gigged in venues from small pubs to cruise ships to the Hammersmith Apollo but his biggest successes have been for his solo shows which have received commercial and critical acclaim. His 2011 show ’10 Films with my Dad’ was the sleeper hit of the Edinburgh fringe and returned for 5 further years, selling out on each return. He followed this with the shows ‘The Joys of Retail,’ ‘Mr Blue Sky’ and ‘The Vicar’s Husband’ which also featured on BBC1.

Aidan has authored 2 books - ’10 Films with my Dad’ and ‘Never eat the buffet at a sex club’ with his third, ‘Subcutaneous’ being published in late 2022.

Meet your Organiser


Phil Allan-Smith is an experienced comedy promoter, actor, improviser, podcaster, and character comedian. With over 5 years industry knowledge as a comedy promoter and 8 years experience as a performer, Phil’s knowledge within the comedy sector can help new acts move in the right direction and avoid making any of the obvious and easily made mistakes.

Phil is the owner of Shoe Cake Comedy and produces pro and semi-pro comedy nights all over the north. He performs stand up as the Boro mad character act Ted Hanky, and is also a member of the award winning improvisation group The Discount Comedy Checkout who were recently nominated for ‘Best Kids Show’ at The Leicester Comedy Festival.

£100 per person (plus ticket platform booking fee) - paid in full ahead of sign up

The Shoe Cake Comedy Course Refund Policy:

£25.00 of your course fee is a non-refundable deposit to cover our admin costs.

30 days before the course start date - refund (minus non-refundable £25)

Within 30 - 15 days of course start date - 50% course fee refund (minus non-refundable £25)

Within 14 days of course start date - no refund.

In certain circumstances we may be able to transfer you to another course date if required. Please speak to us in advance. 

If you miss a week or more - we can not refund any amounts for non attendance.



The course is an inclusive course and we want everyone to feel happy and welcome. 

We encourage your behaviour to be respectful of the other attendees. Your material you will write and perform can be a little rude, cheeky, tongue in cheek ... thats comedy ... but we don't accept any material or behaviour that is overly offensive, racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic ... etc.. you get the idea!

We will operate an open door policy and you can come and talk to the tutors anytime if you have any concerns.
